RGT marine LLC is The Largest Manufacturers, Suppliers & Stockists of all type Sacrificial Zinc Anodes in UAE and Middle East to provide Cathodic Protection. Zinc anode is a type of sacrificial anode used to prevent corrosion through cathodic protection. It is also classified as a galvanic anode, with the other galvanic anodes being made from aluminum or magnesium. A anode's protective properties result from a strongly negative reduction potential, which is more negative than the metal it is protecting. Oxidants, which corrode metals, will oxidize the anode rather than the protected metal structure, thus preventing the structure from being corroded. As zinc anodes are recommended for salt water applications, the most common usage is found in marine applications such as on boat hulls, tanks, rudders and piers. They are also commonly used for underground tanks and piping. Like the other galvanic anodes, zinc anodes have the following advantages:
    • Require no external power source
    • Easy to install
    • Low voltage
    • Low maintenance

One of the most important maintenance tasks when owning a boat is making sure you protect underwater metals, such as prop shafts and the engine, from electrolytic corrosion to prevent wear and damage. This can be done through the use of sacrificial anodes. Boat anodes are fitted or bonded to the desired part and these are easily replaced to offer continual protection. All cathodic protection systems must be inspected annually and the sacrificial anodes renewed if more than 50% are wasted.

Sacrificial Anodes

Sacrificial Anodes are highly active metals that are used to prevent a less active material surface from corroding. The sacrificial anode will be consumed in place of the metal it is protecting, which is why it is referred to as a “sacrificial” anode.

Cathodic protection

Cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. A simple method of protection connects the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded sacrificial metal to act as the anode. The sacrificial metal then corrodes instead of the protected metal.

As a general guide, for steel and GRP hulled boats, zinc anodes would be most appropriate for salt water applications and magnesium anodes would be more suitable for freshwater applications. However, for boats with a wooden hull, the fitting of magnesium anodes is not recommended as they will have a damaging effect on the timbers around the fixings, known as electrochemical decay. Aluminium anodes are most popular on continental waterway craft.
